single track signals

Hi all

On the single track lines, what is the purpose of the yellow dot/white signals.
For what I can see, when I approach one of those signals, suddenly the white light starts flashing. Does that mean free line? I've noticed that when the light is off, I have to acknowledge the signal, but I can't see the point as there's no main signal...
And those same signals, but with 2 yellow dots, what do they mean?

This is a monitoring signal for the street signalling of level crossings. Flashing white indicates that the street signalling has been activated successfully after crossing the activation contact. In case it does not start flashing you have to acknowledge when passing and then stop in front of the level crossing and pass it acc. to the procedure for a malfunctioning one.

There's more on this topic (and english descriptions of all German rail signals) on sh1.org.
