Zusi visibility settings

Dear Zusi Users,

I'd like to ask you about your preferences in Zusi visibility settings. I did some performance tests with following settings:
1. Visibility: 2500 m, Scenery preload distance: 7000 m
2. Visibility: 7000 m Scenery preload distance: 0 m

I noticed that performance level for both options is very similar. Big advantage of the second option is visibility of distant objects. It is very good looking escpecially in mountain scenery like Obere Ruhrtalbahn. Could you tell me why should I use preload distance option? For me is useless, because as I wrote performance is the same. What do you think about that?

Best Regards
Don

The preload distance gives Zusi time to load the scenery from the disk into the main memory and from there into the graphics card memory. If you set it to 0, Zusi will start loading the scenery objects only when they should already be displayed, resulting in objects popping up when they have been loaded. You probably do not notice this since it all happens at distances near the horizon (7000 m).

If your computer is powerful enough to render 154 square kilometers of data performantly, go ahead. But note that this data needs to be kept in memory, of which Zusi can only use 3GB, so you might run into trouble in large city areas.

Ok but 7000 m for preload isn't too much? Maybe it's better to set something between for example: visibility 4000 m and preload 2000-3000 m. What settings do you use?

I suggest to set preload to 3.000 m and visibility to 5.000 - 6.000 m. Suitable for most recent computers.

Michael
